The pattern is the invisible technical structure that determines how a garment fits, moves and lasts over time. Before touching the final fabric, before prototyping, before any aesthetic assessment: there is the pattern. And the pattern has to be right.
Atelier ModArch builds patterns for high-end fashion starting from the designer's sketch or from a direct measurement — on the physical sample, on the body, on the brand's measurements. Every curve, every margin, every balance point is considered in relation to the structure of the garment and the fabric that will produce it.
A poorly built pattern carries errors that multiply size after size. A garment that doesn't fit in XS rarely settles in XL. Pattern making is not an intermediate step: it is the foundation. Building it well from the start saves time, material and sampling iterations.

The starting point determines the construction method. From a sketch: the designer's drawing is translated into geometry — the freest starting point, but also the one requiring the most technical interpretation, because a fashion sketch has stylised proportions that must be brought back to real measurements. From a physical sample: an existing garment is measured piece by piece to rebuild its pattern — typical when you want to replicate a fit that works, or industrialise a garment built by hand. From direct measurement: measurements are taken on the body or on the brand's reference mannequin — the most precise starting point when the garment must deliver a specific fit.
In all three cases, the first output is the base pattern in the sample size, which then goes through defect correction and fitting before any size grading. The order is not negotiable: grading a pattern that has not yet been validated multiplies errors across the entire size range.
The service follows the four-phase method described on the method page. It starts with the brief: garment type, intended material, base size, size range, production constraints. Then comes pattern development in CAD, with table checks of assembly curves and symmetries before cutting. The prototype in toile or substitute material is validated in fitting; corrections go back into the digital file. Only once the pattern is approved does the production phase begin: size grading, marker making and delivery of the complete package to the manufacturer.

Entrusting pattern making to an external service makes sense in three scenarios: when the garment's complexity exceeds in-house skills (technical down jackets, multi-layer constructions and industrialised tailoring require a specialisation that is not worth keeping in-house unless you produce that type of garment continuously); when the workload exceeds the team's capacity in a given period — sampling peaks, new categories, pre-delivery emergencies; when the cost of a fitting error is high and you need the certainty of correct foundations before production. Both. We build from scratch (from sketch or sample) or intervene on already developed patterns with fit or construction issues. Fit correction is a stand-alone service.
A simple base pattern takes 2–4 working days. A complete technical outerwear piece (with lining, size grading and marker making) takes 10–15 days. Timelines are defined in the initial brief with a shared calendar.
